ECS Update - May 2009:

On 1 July 2009, new Customs controls are being introduced throughout the EU under the EC’s Export Control System.

For Direct Exports from the UK, (those goods that are exported directly from the UK), the changes are minimal. However, for Indirect Exports (those goods that leave the UK and exit the EU via another Member State), the changes are significant.

The following information (some of which you may already provide) will be required on export declarations from 1 July 2009.

Information on ECS and how it affects Datafreight users can be accessed on our website, just click on Support and then ECS Guide.
The following Customs Information Papers are also available for download:

CIP (09) 31 ECS – Summary of the Changes
CIP (09) 32 ECS – Time Limits for lodging Export Declarations
CIP (09) 33 ECS – Single Transport Contract

In addition we will be adding ECS information to our News section as we approach 1 July 2009.

Note. You will require a software upgrade to the latest version of Datafreight. Roll-out of this new version is already underway and we plan to have all users upgraded in plenty of time for the start of ECS on 1 July 2009.

EORI Update - May 2009:

Economic Operator Registration & identification (EORI)

On 1 July 2009, the Economic Operator Registration & Identification scheme is being introduced by HM Revenue & Customs. The scheme will replace the current VAT Registration / TURN scheme for exporters, importers and freight forwarders.

In the UK, around 98% of current VAT Registration numbers / TURNs will simply be ‘converted’ to EORI numbers. The likelihood is that if a current VAT Registration number / TURN ends in 000, it will probably remain the same as an EORI number.

However, if you have a Branch office TURN (ending in 001,002, 003 etc) you may not be able to use that TURN from 1 July 2009.

Information on the EORI scheme and how it affects Datafreight users can be accessed in our EORI FAQs on our website, just click on Support and then ECS Guide.
The following Customs Information Papers are also available for download:

CIP (09) 13 - EORI
CIP (09) 36 - EORI
HMRC Form C220A – Application for EORI

In addition we will be adding EORI information to our News section as we approach 1 July 2009.

EORI doesn’t affect any of the boxes on the export declaration and therefore does not require any change to Datafreight. However, you will need to consider how you approach the updating of your name and address files in Datafreight, as after 1 July 2009 many of the VAT Registration Numbers / TURNs could be obsolete and your export entry rejected by the CHIEF system.
